[미디어리퍼블릭] 이상우 기자=The DC Webfest celebrated its 8th edition in 2020 in Washington DC, the capital of the United States. It was founded in 2013 by Otessa Marie Ghadar and is the oldest webfest in the United States after the LAWEBFEST (10 years) in Los Angeles. The DC Webfest has been hosting offline events every year in early April sponsored by Google. However, in the wake of Covid-19, US government policies prohibited large events, so the webfest was replaced by an online event.

With a focus on technology and entertainment such as web series, games, VR/AR, apps, and podcasts with specialization in digital content, more than 40 works were invited from all over the world. Following the online event, the winners were announced April 5th, 2020 on Facebook and now on the website.

The only webdrama selected from South Korea, Lotte Haus, a digital branded series, was the recipient of the Digital Series Special Jury Award. It set a precedent as a successful case that combined Germany’s first global joint adventure and co-brand with South Korea.

Lotte House is based on Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther”. It is a well-established link between storytelling and co-branding of the Wetzlar Lotte House in Germany and the Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea.

Young Man Kang, director of Lotte House, received online news of the award during the aftermath of Covid-19, said, “I am so happy to receive the second award from abroad. Unfortunately, this is an online event, but I hope that the Covid-19 serious virus situation in the United States will calm down soon.

The German Die Seriale Webfest event in June will also be held online. The people from the Lotte Tower who were invited to Wetzlar City, where the original Lotte was born, will postpone their visit to next year due to the virus.

I would like to thank the people in charge of Germany’s LOTTE HOUSE and LOTTE WORLD TOWER for accepting the web format and their help in completing this project.”

Offline events can easily be replaced online because they are web content. Short-form web content will continue to grow in the future.

Lotte House won the “Premio Speciale Digital Media Fest” award at the Digital Media Fest offline event in Rome, Italy early December 2019.
